Goldilocks and The Bear Foundation, a nonprofit organisation based in the Western Cape, offers free mental health screenings and early intervention services to schools within underprivileged communities in this region. This initiative addresses the growing recognition of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among school- aged children and the critical need for supportive educational strategies that eschew punitive measures. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by symptoms including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, which can impair academic, social, and emotional development. Globally, the prevalence of ADHD among schoolchildren is estimated to range between 3% and 5%. Although there is no definitive prevalence rate established for South Africa, emerging studies suggest this figure may be rising, with some estimates indicating prevalence rates possibly reaching up to 10% in certain developing contexts. This implies that approximately one in every 25 learners could be living with ADHD, underscoring the importance of addressing their specific educational needs. Children with ADHD are frequently misunderstood within classroom settings. Behaviours often misinterpreted as laziness, defiance, or poor motivation are frequently manifestations of underlying neurological differences.
