Issue 5 | 2021 | MENTALHEALTHMATTERS | 37 MHM Life as an adult is already a challenge. As an adult with ADHD, the challenge is compounded. ADHD can manifest in a wide variety of symptoms, which can affect almost every aspect of daily life, resulting in poor work performance, issues in relationships and a knock to self-esteem. The idea in many people’s minds is that ADHD is a childhood condition, resulting in many adults with the condition not being diagnosed and not seeking treatment and help. Most don’t realise that there are simple, everyday adjustments that can be made that will have a huge impact on their quality of life. MINDSET The first challenge of being an adult with ADHD is coming to terms with your diagnosis and not letting it define you. Establishing a positive mindset makes everything else just a little easier. • ADHD doesn’t have to hold you back in life. It’s okay to be different. ADHD is not an indication of intelligence or capability. While living with ADHD brings many challenges, it doesn’t mean you can’t achieve the life you desire. • While ADHD is chronic, it’s treatable and manageable. Learning about ADHD and the available treatment options is the first step toward getting it under control. • While self help tips can be impactful, treatment should include the advice of a professional, and involve family members and partners for added support and understanding. ROUTINE Creating good habits can be more challenging with ADHD, but with commitment and persistence these can become automatic over time. • Establishing routine, consistency and follow through, especially for morning activities, after work and bedtime can make all the difference. • A helpful tip is to post a few reminders of what you need to do every day on your fridge, bedroom mirror, in the office etc. • Check your diary a few times a day to stay on top of important tasks. • Set your phone to voicemail to avoid distractions at work. • Write down what you spend, especially if you are an impulse buyer. • Take short breaks while busy with tasks, especially if you find yourself wandering after long periods of time. BEDTIME ROUTINE Sleep is among the most important factors in the management of ADHD, and establishing a good bedtime routine is essential. • Go to bed and wake up at the TIPS FOR YOUR ADULT PATIENTS LIVING WITH ADHD
