There may be other factors that need to be considered, such as possible co-morbid diagnoses, as well as other conditions that may mimic the symptoms of ADHD including different psychiatric disorders, learning disorders, developmental conditions and even visual or auditory problems. As a doctor, it’s prudent to investigate all possibilities and refer to appropriate professionals in order to diagnose and treat ADHD accurately and effectively. ADHD can manifest in various behavioural, social and cognitive ways. Some of these symptoms can include excessive movement and talking, restlessness, emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, challenges with anticipating consequences, low frustration tolerance, distractibility, difficulties with executive functioning (such as planning and organisation) and struggling to focus on one task at time. As per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5), ADHD needs to cause impairment across multiple domains in order to meet the criteria for diagnosis. When exploring ADHD as a possible diagnoses it’s important to investigate the ways in which the condition affects the patient and their family at school/work and home, interpersonally and in relationships.
