Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. In the last ten years, the emergence and rapid use of social media have both benefitted and impaired the mental health of young people. Although social media can be helpful, those with ADHD might find it more difficult than the average person due to their inattentiveness and impulsivity. Social media has become a significant part of the lives of people, especially young people, providing them with several ways of communication, connecting with others, and ways of expressing themselves online. Social media can be defined as “a form of electronic communication” such as websites for social networking and blogging. This enables young people to create online communities where they can post and exchange information, ideas, firsthand experiences, or anything about a wide variety of topics. The definition of social media can be further extended to membership in an online community and participation in several social networks on the internet such as online games. The list of social media platforms widely used includes, amongst others, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, MySpace, Tik Tok, Pinterest, YouTube and blogging. Even though social media can create a feel of connection and being supported, excessive consumption has adverse impacts on mental health, for instance, raising anxiety, depression, or stress. Some research suggests that the interactive nature of social media can have both positive and negative effects on the self- esteem of young people. Young people appreciate receiving “likes” and positive “comments” on their social media posts, which gives their self-esteem a temporary boost, however, the lack of social media engagement or negative feedback such as cyberbullying, may make them feel socially isolated and decrease their self- esteem. The Positive Effects of Social Media on Individuals with ADHD Although many people believe that social media and technology negatively impact our lives, studies suggest that there are benefits of social media, especially for individuals with ADHD. One benefit is the sense of community and belonging that social media offer. Many young adults with ADHD face challenges in the daily lives with e.g. planning, socialising and platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to name a few, provide a space where that can connect with others who face similar challenges. It’s here where they share ideas and practical solutions with each other to make their daily lives more manageable. These support networks can lead to improving their self-esteem and a better understanding of their condition. Social media can also be used as an educational tool.
